Schmitz writes such memorable characters, you'll swear you would recognize them were you to meet them in real life.
Here are some of them, and the stories where they appear.
Telzey AmberdonProbably Schmitz's most memorable character, Telzey first appears in Novice where an alien species initiates her telepathic abilities. In the sequel Undercurrents Telzey's new talents lead her to trouble (something that would happen quite often). These first two stories were gathered together to form the novel The Universe Against Her.Her next adventure is Poltergeist, though it was published later. Then come Goblin Night, Sleep No More, and The Lion Game, which were gathered into the collection The Lion Game. The next four stories: The Telzey Toy, Resident Witch, Compulsion, and Company Planet, were included in the collection The Telzey Toy. The last Telzey stories have finally been reprinted in Telzey & Trigger. They are Glory Day, Child of the Gods, The Symbiotes.

Trigger ArgeeFirst appeared in Harvest Time, along with Holati Tate. That story serves as a prequel to A Tale of Two Clocks, which also features Quillan and Pilch. Trigger meets Pilch again when she takes up the problem of the Hana tree in The Pork Chop Tree, and then teams up with Telzey in Compulsion. Trigger and Telzey share another adventure in Glory Day, and finally in The Symbiotes.

Heslet "Bad News" QuillanFirst appears in Lion Loose..., and again in A Tale of Two Clocks. Despite such short shrift, he is one of Schmitz's most memorable characters.

Holati Tate in Harvest Time |
Holati TateA former Space Scout, now an upper level administrator for the Precolonization Department. He appears as Triggers friend and boss in Harvest Time, A Tale of Two Clocks, The Pork Chop Tree, and Aura of Immortality.

Professor MantelishVery few authors can successfully draw a genius character. The poet/linguist in Zelazny's "A Rose for Ecclesiastes" is a notable exception. Schmitz does not succeed to that extent. Mantelish is supposedly the most prominent scientist in the Hub, but comes off more as a kook.Mantelish appears in three stories: A Tale of Two Clocks, The Pork Chop Tree, and Aura of Immortality.

PilchA Psychology Service operative, and something of an enigma. First appears in A Sour Note on Palayata, helps Trigger in A Tale of Two Clocks, and makes a startling admission in Compulsion

The Kyth Interstellar Detective AgencyKyth consists of several very competent people. It is owned by Wellan Dasinger, whom we meet in The Star Hyacinths, Undercurrents, and Resident Witch. In The Searcher, we meet two more members, Danestar Gems and Corvin Wergard. Wergard also appears in Resident Witch. When Telzey first gets into trouble in Undercurrents, her father hires Kyth Interstellar. In Resident Witch, Dasinger asks for Telzey's help on a tough case.

Nile EtlandA research scientist and trouble shooter on the water world of Nandy Cline, Nile appears in both Trouble Tide and The Tuvela.

Ticos CayThough he appears only in The Tuvela, Ticos is none-the-less a major Schmitz character.

Keth DebollOne final recurring character is news reporter for Adacee, and a relative of Telzey's. He appears with her in Company Planet, and solo in A Nice Day for Screaming. He also tries to make a Comweb call to Quillan in A Tale of Two Clocks, but Quillan won't take the call!.
